Across the 10-episode season, the series recorded 944,000 in organic reach, representing an increase of 619%. Watch time increased 1,804% to 31,000 hours, while the number of new viewers increased 330% to 890,000, according to Chronicle Media.
The series was created by Alex Orrelle and CC0 Studios founder Lawl, also known as Joe McNaney, with production by The Hive Studio.
CC0 Studios and The Hive Studio partnered with Chronicle Media for three months to identify potential audiences and direct new viewers to the series’ YouTube channel.
Chronicle Media identified audience segments that included men ages 13 to 34 and viewers of animation, horror and dark fantasy channels. The company also reported increased viewing across multiple devices, particularly connected televisions.
“‘The Normal MFer’ shares similar origins with ‘Backrooms’ — a kernel of an idea that began as a meme on 4chan and quickly found meaningful audiences on YouTube. Today’s creators now have the freedom to build and establish passionate fandoms across social media, representing a new model and pathway to mainstream success. With ‘The Normal MFer,’ Chronicle’s tech helped a project that began as a meme-driven, irreverent take on teen angst and online subculture find its audience and emerge as a breakout success on YouTube,” said Lawl and Orrelle.
“The Normal MFer” follows a man attempting to become more independent while navigating video games, online influencers, financial expectations, social anxiety and his relationship with his parents. The series also features pets that secretly collect his data for an artificial intelligence startup.
Orrelle serves as showrunner and supervising director. The series is written by Emmy Award nominee Jennifer Skelly and produced by Amit Russell Gicelter’s The Hive Studio.
Chronicle Media operates an AI audience simulation platform designed to identify potential viewers and support audience growth for digital entertainment projects.
